Splashtop is an app to connect from an iPad (or iPhone) to a Mac/PC that are in the same WLAN; real internet access is available for a monthly or annual fee. Splashtop is robust and fast. Of course it does not replace a full fledged desktop environment, but it gets the job done if you don’t have physical access to your computer. Small control elements, like in Aperture above, can be zoomed with spread and pinch gestures.

Animoog is a unique synth app for iPad and iPhone. Usually you are overwhelmed by zillions of knobs and dials of emulated synthesisers. Not in Animoog because the app has a clear layout and navigation structure, and it comes with a impressive amount of presets that take you straight to playing sci-fi sounds on the keyboard. Mind your fingers! – the sound depends where you hit the keys and how you slide horizontally and vertically. Surprising enough, the small screen real-estate of iPhones is no limit, because the whole screen can be used for sliding tones!

iThoughts is a mind mapping tool for iOS and MacOS X. Maps can be synched among all devices via iCloud or DropBox. I use the latter, which is a bit tricky to set-up, and I run into glitches when using fonts on the Mac that are not available on the mobile devices. Nonetheless, iThoughts scores high at style templates for mind maps. For each level, layout, font, font size, line style and node style can be configured and applied to any other map. Touch interaction is a joy, and the keyboard shortcuts for Mac are quite powerful.
BTW The map above is a User Experience Journey Map for a workshop (slides here).

The Waste Land by T.S. Eliot /by Fiona Shaw /by TouchPress….

The Waste Land by T.S. Eliot /by Fiona Shaw /by TouchPress. These are at least 3 good reasons to check out the app. Fiona Shaw’s video performance of the poem is splendid. But the app contains 7 more audio recordings by e.g. Jeremy Irons, Sir Alec Guinness and Eliot himself. A facsimile and commentary notes make this app a leading example for literature on tablets.
à propos, when taking the screenshot above I settled by chance on the section about nothing. Watch how Fiona Shaw talks about nothing (and theatre and the rhythm of language) at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City.

SECTOR is as wonderful and weird as it looks. It is a Markov process applied to a music loop, which essentially means that at the end of each sector a dice is rolled to decide where to continue. The result is less arbitrary than it seems because you can adjust the chances of hyper-jumps between the sectors. For short: Math meets techno.
